History

Timeline

Neolithic Period

Through various excavations conducted throughout recent years, it has become increasingly evident that human civilizations have inhabited the Orkney Islands for over 6000 years. With archeological sites such as the Ness of Brodgar, a ring of rocks which pre-dates the pyramid building by the Egyptians, it comes as no surprise that the Orkney Islands serves as Great Britain's oldest settlements and sites for earliest signs of agriculture and worship. Notable locations include:

  • Skara Brae
  • Maeshowe
  • Ring of Brodgar
  • Ness of Brodgar
  • Standing Stones of Stenness
  • Knap of Howar
  • Midhowe chamebered cairn
  • Broch of Gurness

Stromness & Hudson Bay

Formed in 1670 through the support of Prince Rupert, the Hudson's Bay Company quickly expanded into becoming Canada's most powerful monopoly. By docking into the Orkney town of Stromness, the Hudson's Bay company leveraged local resources and labor, forming indelible ties between the two regions in the years that have since followed.
